Ok I've read a bunch of reviews here, and I must say this. I save SO much on kitty litter, and so much effort cleaning cat boxes, and it's SOOO nice not to have the smell, I would buy the motor every 3 months if I need to. However, I saw someone moaning about the plastic gears... I've had no trouble with the gears to which the motor attaches. The motor itself burned up. I actually took it apart, and had a look at it. It has some nylon gears in it, but those should last a while. The issue that I have found, is that the bowl itself can touch the wall, if the user is not careful, causing the motor to overwork itself. It's a very small motor and not designed for added wear and tear of having to push the bowl against the friction of the wall.
Further, regarding clumping litter. I have two small kittens and they do not cause problems with clumping litter, but I have a big old tom cat, and he likes to urinate right next to the conveyor, causing the litter to clump in such a way as to cause undue friction on the bowl, as he makes a rather large clump, and it sticks to the bottom of the bowl. With respect to that, the solution lies in that the owner must keep an eye on the box to make sure it is free and clear of all obstructions. Thanks for a great product, we do appreciate it, but a larger motor would help.

After going thru several of the replacement motors with the plastic gear, that as we all know likes to strip, they finally sent me a motor with a metal gear,,,,now gear doesn't strip, but the new motor only lasted 8 months. I looked at other brands of litter boxes because I am tired of buying motors, but they all seem to suffer from similar problems so once again, I am buying yet another replacement motor, this time I am buying 2 so I will always have one on hand as this motor has quit 3 days before we leave on vacation for a week and I am pretty sure I will not see a new motor before we leave which is irritating to say the least.

the motor on the conveyor and the motor that makes the box go around do not last very long. if the wood last longer it would be a nice system.

Please ensure that the area below the bowl where the bowl motor and gearbox sit are clean and free from litter or dust which could make its way into the gear and cause the motor to overheat. In addition, make sure that you are not filling the bowl past the maximum fill line, as this will weigh the bowl down and make it much more difficult for both the bowl and conveyor motors to operate normally. If the motors have stopped working entirely and you're unable to get them running again, please keep in mind that your litter box includes a one-year manufacturer's warranty. I have been using the Petsafe Simply Clean for a year and 9 months for one cat who weighs 11 pounds....I am very satisfied with this product!! I have not had to replace the motor till now(which is why I am on this site) and really I can not complain because I figured I would need to about once a year but it lasted longer than I expected. There is only one issue I have had and that's with smaller feces pieces getting stuck in the groves on the conveyor in turn making it jam up and not move. It did this one day that we were not at home to remove the small piece of feces and the conveyor broke(the backside of it where the metal rod is that makes the conveyor fingers move). Tbe plastic clips broke but all I did was used a a couple things from the hardware store and got it working fine again...I would suggest not using plastic clips to hold the metal rotating rid but metal ones. I have also had to cut the finger on the conveyor belt that is closest to the outside edge because again small feces would get caught there and caused the finger to bend inward thus making the conveyor action not work properly. Aside from those couple of quick fixes I have had no issues!!

I love these litter boxes. The only thing I don't love about them is how often this part breaks. I have two of these litter boxes, and I have probably bought about 9 of these gears. I think the casing needs better protection from the cat litter, because despite having made shields for the box, there is always SOME litter that gets down in the turning mechanism, and using high grade clumping litter, it ruins the gears in short order. A proper cover MADE for the box would be incredibly beneficial, if not improved quality of the gear mechanism itself. I would gladly buy two new litter boxes with updated parts that didn't need replacing quite so often.

This is because depending on the weight, age, diet, and health of your pet, they may use the litter box more frequently than others and can cause more stress on the motors.

The design is such that the litter finds its way to the bowl gears, clumps (as it should, especially in higher humidity), and fouls the mechanism. One cat. 9 pounds. Five motors. Using very expensive, high quality litter, so I'm not responsive to suggestions that I use better litter or clean the apparatus more. It's just a poor design. Maybe a worm gear for the next version. I agree with a previous poster, that if I hadn't already paid so much, this thing would have been history.

This machine is fantastic. We have three large cats, and have used this machine for three years.

HOWEVER, we have replaced the machine once and the motors several times. While we have found ways to make the motors last longer, the bottom gear is a real issue. It would be great if the gear was made of something stronger than plastic.

But, even though this machine has some problems, it is the best I have found on the market because it doesn't require expensive bags, litter, etc. It disassembles easily, which helps for cleaning.

I recommend this product, but hope that one day the motor issue will be repaired.

I have two smaller cats, 8-10 lbs, that this works great for. Mine aren't too picky about their potty place so took right to it.

I am on my second one. First one lasted about 18 months little no issues. when the conveyor motor on the first went out I called Petsafe to discuss buying a new motor and to see if there might be something else I should consider to get my magic bowl back to working order.

The representative I spoke too was very helpful and fixed me up right. Offered me a special warranty price on a new one. Turned out to be half, or $40. bucks. A bit more than replacing both motors.

Second one has lasted close to a year. On this one, the bowl motor assembly wore the gears down so the bowl doesn't turn now. This was my fault as I tried a new litter that is absolutely horrible for this system. (Arm & Hammer Super Clump, in the silvery black box. Their other clumping litter works perfectly fine) I suspect it is the light weight litters in general. It didn't move through the conveyor well, at time built up at the base of the conveyor and spilled over the side. Ultimately, the dust built up in the bowl motor assemble clogged the cogs and wore down the gears.

New motor on the way and will be back in business shortly.

Suggestion to PetSafe: Really should make that a sealed unit.

As previously stated the motors are poorly built and only last about 3 months!

I agree with Shane. If you own this box you need an indoor electrical timer to turn it off periodically. If you run it for just 1 day straight, take the lid off and feel the conveyor motor. You can fry an egg on it it's that hot. You'll only get a couple months at best on the conveyor motor. A small motor like that will not last long going 24/7. I have mine set to 12 hours on, 12 hours off and they last about 6 months before they start squealing.

Now the pros to owning this box. I have 2 of these boxes, 3 adult cats, one is an 18 pounder, and all 3 took to this box immediately. There was no adjustment period they went right to it. With 3 cats I only deal with cat litter 3 times a week for about 10 minutes taking the bag to the trash, and adding clean litter. It really is a great design, and very efficient. It has saved me quite a bit of money on scoopable litter. If I have to replace the motors twice a year, so be it. $60/year to keep my hands out of dirty litter is a good deal.

Note to Simply Clean: Keep your motors in stock. As I'm writing this I was going to order 2 more conveyor motors and they're out of stock....AGAIN!

Quality sucks. The box is used by a single 5-6 pound Siamese and I am either replacing the top motor or the bottom one constantly! I have looked online for a different brand motor with the same rpm, but no luck yet as I have not less than ten of the plastic set ups with screws. I keep hoping I can piece something together to but not yet. I think a record player motor on the old 16 rpm may still be too fast. Hope springs eternal because my wallet isn't and they always die at 90 days, never under 30 days. Sigh. Wouldn't buy again.

Also, as tiny as she is, there still isn't that much space for her to stand, dig, and go with the big cover in the way. I think a big cat would pee all over it. She is in a separate room and I have never let my big fellas use it. They use a cat genie.

We bought our box three years ago and the bowl motor shredded the teeth off the gears in months. At that point there was no replacement part available. It got tossed in the corner of the basement and forgotten about. I was about to toss it to the curb and eat the $100 spent on when my wife came across parts newly available. We ordered a new bowl kit, it sat again before fixing it and now 5 months after getting it up and running, the gears are stripped out again. I disassemble weekly and vacuum under the bowl and around the motors.

Suggestion: make all the gears out of metal or plastic- the metal gear on the motor tears the teeth off the plastic bowl gears.

I have 2 of these boxes, both about 2-3 yrs old for a 3 cat household. I have replaced 1 bowl motor and 1 conveyor motor. For all of the people stating the motors have a short lifespan here are a couple tips that will help.

1. Add a guard around the top of the bowl that extends to the base to prevent litter from getting under the bowl. I use a piece of thick black drawer liner that is held onto the bowl cap with Velcro so it can be removed for cleaning. Extend the liner material from the top of the box to the floor as it does not rotate. By attaching it to the bowl top rail, the bowl can spin behind the liner. Just run the liner from the edge of the conveyor around to the other side of the conveyor. This will keep it silent and prevent break downs.

2. Run the litter box on a timer. As it is a continuous cleaning box, it never shuts off. Not many motors will run 24 hours a day for years in this price range. I run mine 6 hours on and 6 hours off. This keeps the motors cooler and also give the box to fully clean itself.

Hope this helps. Over all a great product that takes the mess out of the litter box. I use plastic grocery bags in the waste tray so to empty i just grab the bag handles and throw the mess away. Customer service is top notch and with a little love, the box will last a very long time.

I own 3 of these machines and have been thinking about a fourth, but right now I am not going to purchase more until this issue gets solved. one of my units is still working perfectly since the purchase at the end of July, one is making a grinding noise on the conveyor motor, and the third is having bowl motor issues, and will need a motor soon I suspect. It's a great concept, especially for smaller cats, but the quality of the parts just don't cut it. with 2 out of my 3 machines having problems, I am less than happy. Especially with what I paid for them.

They need a better motor, the current ones are junk!

we have replaced the conveyor motor twice and I am about to order a third bowl motor. the first bowl motor and first conveyor motor were within the warranty time but since then we have had to purchase our motors ourselves. I completely agree with many of the other reviews had the litter box not cost so much I would have thrown it away a long time ago. but with the price of the equipment you would think the quality of part in it would be better, or they would replace them at no charge knowing that so many people are having to replace them so often.

Well, this is the third bowl motor, and the 2nd conveyor motor... I follow all the appropriate steps and precautions, and even vacuum the space under the bowl daily, yet I keep blowing these units. If I didn't pay so much in the first place for the litter box, it would have been in the trash months ago. NOT RECOMMENDED at all!!!

I just purchase my forth motor on a two year old litter box... the motor fails about every six months... would not recommended this litter box.
