The door is good, overall. But the inside flap broke off after one winter.

PETSAFE RESPONSE

Thanks for taking the time to review the Freedom Flap, Frank! We are sorry to hear that it has broken. Please know that there are many factors that contribute to wear and tear on the flaps, and every home is different! For product support, please reach out to our Customer Care Team at 1-866-738-4379.

We moved to Montana from Oklahoma six years ago. We have four miniature schnauzers going in and out the dog door all day, everyday, etc. I am only now replacing the flap because a small tiny strip has started to tear up. They love it and will also sit with their head out searched for something to bark at. I certainly cannot complain about the flap. Works great for us. Because we get lots of winds, I am wondering if I should also double the door flap.

We've had our door flap up now three years. Today, I finally replaced it. Fortunately, for us, we bought two at the time of our purchase. Our temperatures get down to -25. Needless to say, the flap does get frozen and I have to open the door for our dog, but that's okay. But, the flap never cracked or broke off due to temp. We changed the flap from excessive use and it was starting to tear from the screw holes. But our Cocker Spaniel loves to dash out the door with full force, so no fault of the flap. We will be purchasing this product again!!!

I had my medium Petsafe door installed in 2010. This is the first time I've had to replace it. It has accommodated dogs & cats all this time without problems. Low energy costs. I suspect my need to replace it now is due to my new dog trying to chew my whole house down. I live in South East Texas, where we have extreme heat.

5 years ago we upgraded our PetSafe door to XL due to the new rescue dog.
The sun shines on the flap and makes it soft, and the big dog sits inside with her head poked out and watched the world, helping the flap to warp like crazy.

I took PetSafe's advice, bit the bullet, and ordered 2 flaps.
they arrived today, and golly what a difference. No breeze is getting in.
My heating bill should go down.
And I think the big dog has stopped watching the world through the doggie door.

If I have to buy a new flap every 2-3 years, so be it. With 3 dogs, I cannot live without a doggie door.

PS - even the Dachshunds have no problem going through the double flaps.

I have the Larson Screen Door with the built in dog flap. I have only had it since July of 2016 and the flap is already warped and lets in cold air right now. The bottom also does not seal very well.

PETSAFE RESPONSE:

Thanks for your review, Brenda! We're sorry to hear that you're having issues with your door and we're happy to see how we can help. It may help to adjust your flap within the flap-holder to find a better seal. As temperatures change, the vinyl flap may contract or expand slightly so it may be necessary to adjust it from time-to-time. To do this, simply loosen the screws and then move the flap around (it moves up-down and left-right) until you find a better seal and then tighten the screws again. Please feel free to reach out to us at 1-800-732-2677 so we can get a little more information to provide more tips and support, Brenda.

I came on today to order our second replacement flap and slide in insert. I just read a few bad reviews, and feel compelled to share my experience. I called the company 3 years ago to order a replacement flap, and customer service helped me get the right flap for my old door. Now, 3 years later, i need an insert, and am getting a fresh insert. I am confused on what size i need, and will call them again. Just call to nake sure u get the right one!

I had a Petsafe door large. Bought about 9 years ago. Yes mine was chewedand needed to be replaced. I bought a new flap and it didn't fit the old model. I found out after taking the door off. The old flap was one the slipped in no screws. So I have a torn out door. Just to find out the new flap would have never worked.

Not set up to be safe from chewers! They can easily access the vinyl flaps and insulation, my dog had it ruined in no time. All chewed up and wasted money. Needs to be made so dogs can't get to flaps

PETSAFE RESPONSE

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Replacement Flap, Lisa. These flaps are made of a soft but durable material that is designed for easy training so that your dog can learn to go smoothly in and out of the home.

Training is extremely important, and it may help to use a spray-on chew deterrent that can be found at most local pet stores. They often come in flavors such as bitter apple, which the dogs find to be unpleasant. We do not have a way to keep the dog away from the door, unless you would like to attach the closing panel during certain times of the day to reduce the risk of chewing.

If you have any questions about PetSafe products, please give us a call at 1-866-738-4379.

I replaced my steel back door with a fiberglass unit with 1/2 window & blind between the glass panes. Cut a rectangle at the bottom to accomodate a PetSafe dog door. I got the large size even though we have a dachshund, miniature schnauzer & basset hound. This PetSafe door has been fabulous in that it provides free access to our fenced backyard for the dogs. That was seven years ago & I've just ordered the first replacement flap for this door. I've gotten great service from my door and would recommend to others. Thanks!

Like so many others, I am replacing this flap again. Bought one year ago. Have two large dogs that use it daily. The magnet at the bottom is not strong enough to keep flap closed. Reason I am replacing, is for the second time, it ripped at the top (and yes, PetSafe, it is installed correctly.)

The screw are too small for the flap itself and I have re-screw the flap several times. I have had my Larson door with XL pet door since 2010.

this morning the flap completely snapped off at all the screws holes from the framing, breaking off all screw holes from frame. this is only the second month of use and as soon as the outside temps dropped below freezing I guess the framing could not handle the cold temps. Now I have no idea how to repair.

PETSAFE RESPONSE:

We're very sorry that your flap has broken at the screw holes after just a couple of months of use, Dawn! Please ensure that you have the door installed at an appropriate height for your dogs; sometimes, if a door is installed too low and dogs have to duck to get through, they can put pressure on the flap and flap holder as they push through, which can cause damage to the flap and door frame over time. Keep in mind that your door carries a one-year manufacturer's warranty that covers defects in parts and workmanship and may very well cover the problem you are experiencing. Please give us a call at the number 1-866-738-4379 and we'll be more than happy to assist you.

I agree this is a good product but it warps too easily and lets cold or warm air in. It nees to be stronger on the sides. My dogs are both big and when it is cold - they charge inside. I have no issues with the middle, top or bottom of the flap. But the sides are terrible. They need to be reinforced with something. thanks

PETSAFE RESPONSE

Thank you for sharing your feedback, Carmen! Please know that your experience has been passed along to the design teams for review. We appreciate any and all feedback! While the flaps are made of a soft but sturdy plastic, they are susceptible to normal wear and tear. I agree with so many of you,, I am replacing this flap,, AGAIN, and these other reviews are not encouraging . My issue is the same,, the flap tears out where it attaches at the top, and warps so cold air gets in,, in my creative inventive mind I think it needs strips of stiff material horizontally to keep it flat against the sides to avoid cold air coming in ( Im planning on glueing a thin piece of plexiglass to mine if I order another) I have mastiffs who are slow moving but big,, they are pretty gentle with this doggy door.It still wore out too soon... I hope this company will consider making this flap stiffer so it won't be so drafty. I am going to look at other brands before I order petsafe again W

Poor design10/20/16

I have been a customer for a number of years and when I ordered this replacement flap last spring, I expected the quality product I had been receiving previously. This flap has a very poor design and is not made for bigger dogs and/or constant use. You need to include washers for the holes at the top of the flap as the side holes stretch out very easily. Unfortunately, I have to order another replacement less than six months from the last time whereas before I could probably go for a couple of years.
I will be looking at other products from other companies while I'm waiting for my LAST replacement flap from this company.

I needed a new flap for the XL. I decided to read the reviews. My, lots of complaints from customers. I have many of the same concerns. I would love the extreme weather flap option for the XL door (the middle flap). I live in North Dakota and I'm always struggling with tighter fitting for the flaps. Something flexible on the sides to improve the seal would be one idea. I use to have a dog door that had two flaps; the exterior flap had a hole for going inside (inside flap would open) and provided a better seal on the outside. Magnets would help them work together for closing.

With all the complaints, I would have expected a little better effort to address the issues than it appears PetSafe has attempted. AND YES, the flaps seem rather overpriced. I am always looking for a better option when I replace a flap annually. I do keep two on the door at all times to give it a little better resistance to the weather. But a better design would be helpful.

The door is great, but the flaps have several deficiencies. PetSafe doesn't seem to want to address their customers biggest concerns. That's what surprises me most.

PETSAFE RESPONSE:

We're very sorry to hear about the issues you've had with the replacement flaps, Phil! You have likely already tried this, but it may be possible to avoid those gaps along the sides of the flap by adjusting it in the flap holder. By loosening the screws (or removing them), you can then adjust the flap's position slightly so that the gaps are covered, and then tighten the screws back into place.

We will certainly pass your comments along to our quality control team for review. Customer feedback is very important to us when it comes to making decisions regarding product changes or updates, so we are very glad to get this type of feedback.

We would be more than happy to help out with the fitting of the flap or any other issues you may be experiencing with the flap or the door. Please give us a call at the number 1-866-738-4379 and we would be glad to assist you.

Love that the dogs can come and go as they want. However, the flap doesn't last very long. I have to replace it every year. I thought the problem was because we have so many dogs using it (10+) but after seeing other reviews it looks like it is pretty common. The sides warp so doesn't provide a good seal. I replace mine just before winter. It would be better with magnetic strips on the side. It is a bit difficult to install by yourself. The cost, $43, of the xl flap makes me consider replacing the whole door with something better.

Almost impossible for one person to replace the large flap with 5 screws. You really need two people one inside and one outside holding the bar with the holes in it and the other person inside tightening the screws and adjusting the flap. Very poor design makes it much harder than it should be to replace the flap. Other than that and having to replace the flap about every two years because it warps we like the product and our two dachsunds love the freedom it gives them.

I purchased my door for my Rottweiler, but when it came out of box the flap had evidently not been packed correctly or was damaged at company. The flap was bent outward on one side letting air in and out. I assumed it would hang and correct itself after a short while but it has been several years and bend still there causing sealing issues.
Also the magnet is way too weak! Many times since the beginning I find it flapping open because the magnet did not connect as my dog went in and out. I had to push it so it would come back and connect. That has been issue since day one.

PETSAFE RESPONSE

We are sorry to hear that you have had difficulties with your door. I am on my third flap in less than six months. My dog just chews the magnets right off. I wish you just sell replacement magnets instead of having to buy a whole door. I know. My dog needs training which is in process.

PETSAFE RESPONSE

Thank you for sharing your experience, Alan. We can understand how frustrating it must be to often need replacement flaps due to a dog's chewing habits. Please know that your feedback has been passed along to the design team for research and review! You may find it helpful to know that many pet stores carry chew deterrent sprays that are flavored in a way that is unsavory to a dog and this may help with your training. It is also helpful to provide plenty of chew toys so that the dog has something else to chew on! Fortunately, we have a great line of chew toys that may work for your pup and they can be seen at this web address :

I have the extra large Freedom door and my fourth flap has now broken, and they are quite expensive to replace. I seem to get 1-2 years from a flap before they go. The flaps tear where the screws hold them at the top. I have a large dog that runs in and out all the time - but that is supposed to be the whole point of a dog door. I would think that the flaps need to be designed to stand up to normal dog use!

I think that pet safe needs to engineer a more reliable way to attach the flaps. Screws that quickly tear through the flap plastic are not reliable (at least for large flaps - which is the only size I have experience with).

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We're sorry to hear you've experienced difficulties with the flap of your pet door tearing, Mark! We certainly understand your frustration and we will pass your experience along to the appropriate team for review. If your large dog has grown a bit since the pet door was first installed, it's possible the pet door may be centered too low. This could be putting excess pressure near the top of the flap which might be causing the tearing issues you've experienced. If you'd like to give us a call at 1-866-738-4379, we'd be happy to see how we can help you further.

PETSAFE RESPONSE:

We're sorry to hear that your flap is not sealing properly, Linda! Please be sure that the magnetic strips at the bottom of the flap and at the bottom of the door frame are clean and free from dust or dirt, as this can reduce the effectiveness of the magnets. PETSAFE RESPONSE

Thank you for sharing your feedback, David. Some dogs can definitely be a bit harder on flaps, but please know that these products are backed by a 1 year warranty for reasons such as these. To prolong the life of your door, we also suggest to try and install the pet door in an area that will not receive direct sunlight. Also, many doors that use this particular flap can hold 2 of these flaps at the same time which can also help extend their use. For assistance and warranty information, please give us a call at 1-800-732-2677.

Easy to install if you have construction knowledge, aluminum housing is durable, and I like the double flaps for energy conservation. Only problem is the doors are easily chewed up and pulled off. Less than six months after installation my dog had pulled the magnet off the bottom of the flap and a month later the door was pulled off. Replacement flaps cost half the price of a new door. This is a fair product that lacks the durability to make it worth purchasing. I would not recommend.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: Thanks for providing us with your feedback, Kaleb! We are sorry to hear you are having difficulties with the flap for your pet door. While the pet door flaps are durable and meant to withstand weather and normal use by pets entering and exiting the pet door, they are not meant to be chewed or tugged upon. Luckily, we do offer many great options for pet training if this is an issue you continue to experience. Please give us a call at 1-800-732-2677 and our product experts would be happy to see how we can help! We can also see what replacement flap options may be available to you. We ordered a custom door from Home Depot in July 2014. It took the dogs about a day to use it and we absloutely love it. No more accidents, getting up at 3:00 am, etc.

We did have an issue with the hinge on one of the flaps. I contacted customer service. I did not directly buy the pet door since it was included in a custom ordered door. Aaron in customer service asked for a copy of the home depot order and a couple pictures of the hinge. 5 days later a box of parts were delivered.

I kept the rating at 5 stars because the door is really nice and customer service outstanding. Petsafe may want to redesign the hinge out of a more durable material.

I replace my flaps once or twice a year. I raise dogs and have 2 doggy doors that are used continually. The newest doggy door that uses the PAC11-11039 flap didn't last very long at all. The plastic that holds the flap onto the door has now broken so will have to fashion something out of metal, like it should be to last. The edges of the flap crack very quickly just from the in and out motion that the dogs cause to the door to use it. These flaps are not very weather resistant either due to the bending of the flap by normal use and the magnet doesn't work after the dogs used it for a period of time.

I truly enjoy this dog door and flap. It takes a lot of abuse every day by my 7 dogs. I have had my original flap for almost 3 years and am just now replacing it. I'd say that is pretty good quality! It does allow some air to seep through but so does my sliding glass door. I know some folks have some gripes about it, but nothing in life is absolutely perfect.

We had to special order this door at Lowe's, but once it arrived and we installed it, the pets have simply adored it. I have a siamese cat that loves to hunt and go outside and even though I've tried to 'ground' him and keep him indoors, he just loves to go out. For our dogs, it's been a blessing. We are a big dog family and it's wonderful that they can go in and out during the day while we work. Not having to open the door and close the door whenever they want out or in is awesome too. When my boxer started getting up in years, he couldn't hold his bladder for as long as he used to (I guess it happens to all of us!) and the pet door helped him so much since he didn't have accidents in the house. Saved me from spending a fortune on puppy pads too, which stink up the house. Now, we have a 9 week Cane Corso puppy and he learned how to utilize the door after 2 days or so and it's helping him learn to go out whenever he needs to!! Thank you PetSafe for making these pet doors, but more importantly for making the replacement flaps continuously available and reasonably priced! Our big dogs go out and come in a lot, as they like to keep tabs on their back yard, so they wear out often. Seems so often in life that you find something great, but then the replacement parts are no longer made. We tell everyone how much we love our pet door. Thank you again!

For $40 bucks the replacement flap is a BUY. Anything like this that gets a lot of use will wear out eventually.
We could not get along without it and the retrievers give it a real work out. I did try a modification that has worked pretty well on the last 2 or 3 flaps I replaced that might be helpful to others and possibly for the company to review for product immprovements.

It has been a while since I bougt the entire door kit (original install), so I think this info is correct.I used some small washers at the screw connections to spread the load of the small screw out somewhat. Pretty effective but I think when our housekeeper tries to clean the door she pulls on it and still splits the plastic at the screw connections.Next I am going to try a drilled aluminum bar on the inside of the flap door connections to further spread out the load the screws create when tightened into the plastic. The plastic has very little tensile strength compared to the screw head when tightened.

Company might consider this as an option for some if not all the plastic doors as a product improvement, especially for large animals or excessive usage.

I've had my dog door for a couple of years now, and it's been a lifesaver! I have two large and destructive dogs......and am just now needing to replace my flap. It's served it purpose well, and I look forward to another couple of years with my new flap.

To those who have complaints, I have this to say: It's a dog device, and it no doubt recieves a great amount of "use" from whatever size dogs you may have. Let's be honest....it's a plastic flap designed to save you the trouble of letting your dog in/out throughout the day. You can't expect it to be 100% airtight and not have a small amount of air leakage (or whatever else your complaint may be). In fact, most actual house doors don't seal 100%. If you dont like the product, then dont use it.........but don't complain when you have to let your dog in and out 20+ times a day.

On that note, my dogs and I thank you for making our lives easier!

$27.90 shipping and all for a small doggie door which cracked even from normal use by a 10# dog. Talk about a bird nest on the ground????? But the good news is that I do have a solution in mind, take the cracked flap and reproduce one myself....fooled twice shame on me.

Our cattle dog destroys these flaps due to constant use. No abuse such as biting them or tugging at them, just blasting through them in top gear. It also seems that a softer durometer flap would last better in the cold months as it seems they get hard and break easier in the winter. I am not willing to buy another one for what I have been paying and will likely get with McMaster Carr or somwhere like that to find a suitable replacement material. Thanks but no thanks petsafe.

We have 4 large dogs that use this door all day, every day, a million times a day...if it wasn't for the 2 two youngest (puppies still) we wouldn't even have to be replacing the flap...they have chewed the corners of the flap completely away....these are two girls that can eat rocks and tree roots, so I would say it's pretty durable if it can withstand our pack!!

I also have an issue with my Classic Aluminum X Large Door. Mine is located in the same room as the furnace and every time the furnace comes on the flap opens up so I have to put the slider in and restrict my 2 dogs access. My flap measures 13 3/4 x 24 5/8 and I cant seem to find a replacement flap to see if it will help keep out the cold and you don't make an extreme weather door that would fit my door opening.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble with your Petsafe Door. The replacement flap for the Classic XL Door is model A04026-4-11, which you can purchase at the link below or by contacting or Customer Care. Please know that we do appreciate your feedback on the need for an XL Extreme Weather Door and that your comments have been passed on to the Pet Access team for review. I installed my door about 1 1/2 yrs ago. It has large chunks on the sides breaking off and letting in tons of cold air.

We installed two of these flap doors about 11 years ago. We have the extra large and it was used daily by two large Newfoundland Dogs. No problems until this year when we think the plastic at the hinged part just wore out. Lots of wear and tear over 11 years. We now have an 8 month old Newfoundland who is going to probably finish off the flap so we are being proactive in replacing them...or at least having a replacement on hand.

We have been pleased with our PetSafe large aluminum frame door since we installed it about 6 years ago. But our newly adopted mixed breed puppy chewed the bottom of the flap, and when I go to find a replacement, I don't find that the dimensions match (even though the door says it is a PetSafe large). The flap is 10 1/4" wide by 17 1/4" long. Did you change the dimensions of the doors and replaceable flaps?

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are happy to hear you have had success with your PetSafe pet door! We are sorry to hear about the measurement mix-up. The measurements on our website are approximate, and your flap's dimensions may vary due to use and weather. It sounds as if the flap you have should be a Large. To be sure, most of our flaps have a model number printed on the flap itself, usually at the top. If you need further assistance, please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677.

I've used the petsafe doors for more than 5 years. The only problem has been, in extremely cold temperatures (lower than -5F), the vinyl flap snaps off at the top. Its obvious the vinyl can't flex at such a low temperature. I think some kind of "hinge" could be utilized to eliminate the problem. Other than that we have had no problems.

I have had an Extreme Weather triple flap doggy door on my porch here in Bloomington, MN, suburbia. Inside the porch, water doesn't freeze all winter, as it is well insulated. I have another PetSafe doggy door that let's my small dog from the porch into my house. I like both doors, as far as working and sealing our the cold and bugs well. However, I'm now on my third set of flaps for the porch to outside doggy door. They crack horizontally as soon as we have a night/day in the single digits. When we had one night a week or so ago that was near zero, the two Neoprene flaps that were less than a year old, both went from fine to brittle and then cracked overnight. A few nights later, with it was -10°F, they both cracked all the way across near the top and fell completely off. PetSafe sent me replacement flaps, but currently has no solution. If I install the new flaps today, they will no doubt be cracked and have fallen off by this weekend. So, what to do??? On the upside, the flaps on the porch to house door have lasted last 8-10 years for my present and former dog. So, I love the convenience, but PetSafe needs to design a new flap that stays flexible to a much lower temperature. New flaps every two years sounds reasonable to me, not every time it gets a bit nippy outside. :o)

We have the same experience as Mr. Lichon -- the flap doesn't sit well in the frame. Weather fluctuations cause the flap to gap, letting in hot summer air or freezing winter air. And with a big hole in the wall, that's a lot of air. The screws keep coming out as well. This door gets minimal use and has been up a bit over a year.
We never had this problem with our previous doggie door, although it had the locking frame so the flap had a second part covering the edges.
We'll call the company after the holidays and see what they might suggest to solve the issue.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are sorry to hear that you experienced these issues with your Replacement Flap. Please know that these flaps are designed to be adjusted vertically or horizontally to properly fit your frame. To give your single flap pet door better wind resistance, you can add an extra flap to your door. Dual flaps are heavier and less likely to blow open in strong winds. If your screws seem unable to easily be removed from your frame, you may need replacements. We do have them available through our Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677.

I have 2 large dogs, so I need to have an XL door. I use 2 of the doors, one on the inside of a garage wall and one on the outside. The corners of the flaps wear off and need replacing every winter. $128 for 2 molded pieces of plastic seems outrageous. If I could find a better product I'd switch.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing an issue with your Replacement Flaps. Please know that these flaps do have a 1 year limited lifetime warranty. Similar to the previous review the replacement flap is not as snug as the original. Same size aluminum door. My issue as more to do with the length being two short. the gap is to large for the magnets to pull up the metal closure strip. I have pulled it out and to make sure I didn't install it wrong but it is pretty basic. It is just to short.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing this problem with your replacement flap. Please know that this flap can be adjusted up or down and from left to right as the flap can shrink and expand with temperature changes. However, if this fails to resolve the problem, the flap may need to be replaced as it could have become warped. If this is the case and a replacement is needed please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677 so that we may provide a solution.

This product worked great at first until the weather got cold and the plastic flap did not seal all the way and cold air leaked in causing frost to build up around the edges. It needs a better type of seal.

I installed 12 of these medium sized dog doors. In the year since I have bought them all 12 plastic flaps have failed and been replaced under the 1 year warranty. Again, I am in need of 7 replacement flaps and I refuse to believe these doors are failing due to my dogs. Most of my issues stem from the fact that the magnetic strips don't stay on the vinyl or flap portion of the door. There are no chew marks they simply do not hold up to use in a kennel environment. I agree with others who have said that this product does not hold up. I contacted the company...again....to be instructed to read the warranty. Good thing I didn't want to read the warranty before purchase because it's not available on the box which should have been my first clue as it only mentions a 10 year warranty not a 1 year warranty for manufacturer defects? I also think it ridiculous to expect customer's who purchase the entire door for $36 dollars to pay $33 for the flap only? Unreal and you can believe I will be researching a new approach. I simply can't afford to replace 7 flaps at that price only to have them fail again. Epic fail!

This is the 3rd door flap I've purchased in about 4 years. Every one has failed at the top where the plastic is thinner than the main flap. I usually fix with duct tape for awhile before buying a new flap. It seems excessive to pay 75% of the original door price for only the flap. It's too expensive and not designed for longevity. I purchase these parts reluctantly.

Like most pups mine destroyed the flaps on the all weather door (all 3). Of course my prior dog loved the door and left it alone but the flap did wear out after 2 years so I got the all weather with 3 flaps. Unfortunately the first dog died so can't say how long the ALL Weather door lasted but when I got the pup , well, liked I said he destroyed it in about 2 months. I looked at replacement parts and WOW! $42.00 for a single flap? I took the old flaps out of the dog door and saw how they were attached and then went to Home Depot, got some clear vinyl flooring, some metal edging and made my own flaps. Cost? $15.00 for enough material to make two doors.
