Great product with adaptations, 11/13/14
by
I was given this sliding glass door insert several years ago from a friend whose dogs wouldn't use it. I installed it myself (with the help of the online video), and my 8 year old golden retriever has used it ever since. I did add some weatherstripping on the sides to prevent cold weather drafts and it does blow open on occasion with wind gusts, but that's when I use the plastic insert. I have since moved to a home with french doors and have not found an adequate replacement without having the double paned windows cut.

No forethought, 9/25/14
by
I bought the patio panel that door and just installed it today. The door looks of good quality and it was relatively easy to install. My biggest pet peeve is all of the screws and brackets are silver. Or a metal color. I bought a white door and I thought or at least I thought it was common sense for the screws to come white as well. I'll keep it because it does serve it's purpose but I really wish the brackets and the screws or white to match the door so they do not stand out as a do right now.

Minor design change needed for recessed application, 5/12/14
by
Important. Before you purchase this door, check to see if you have a recessed application. If you do, call Customer Support before your purchase or installation. I've called their Customer Support and they are very helpful.

Without a minor design change, this door will not fit perfectly flush with the sliding glass door on recessed applications. Also, the door latch won't close properly. The amount of difference may not be acceptable to some.

Design changes are needed for the patio panel top height adjuster and the lower portion of the patio panel frame nearest the sliding glass door. These two areas need a recess for the recess door brackets. With these two modifications, the patio panel would fit flush with the sliding glass door. The brackets for the recess installation are too long for a bottom center install even on a medium door. The instruction video states large door only.

The installation videos on the web site are very well done and helpful.

In conclusion, I and my dog are pleased with this door. I have experienced no issues as expressed in prior reviews.

Very good for moderate weather., 4/18/14

I certainly would not recommend this product for use in severe winter weather , but in moderate weather like we have here in Portland most of the yeat, it performed very well.

Do Not Buy This Door, 2/4/14
by
I purchased this doggy door from Pet Smart for $200.00. I exchanged it twice because the sides of the flap did not seal properly. By the 3rd one I didn't want to hassle anymore and had to have the door so kept it.

I also purchased 2 replacement flaps, thinking there was something wrong with the flap. I'm stupid but persistent! I'm no engineer but the problem seems to be the way the flap attaches to the door which causes the flap to bow out on the sides, allowing cold air to stream in - and believe me it is a breeze.

Don't bother buying this door. Spend the $400-$500 and get a good door with dual pane glass and a flap that actually works.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We apologize that the Freedom™ Patio Panel has failed to meet your expectations. To give your single flap pet door better wind resistance, you can add an extra flap to your door. Dual flaps are heavier and less likely to blow open in strong winds. This door also has a 1 year limited warranty. If you would like to discuss this issue further, please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677 so that we may help find a solution.

Lets lots of outside air in, 1/25/14
by
The flap is made of flimsy plastic which does not seal tightly when naturally closed. Also the flap sometimes stays open a bit after my dog comes in, letting in a tremendous amount of cold air in the winter. This door is in my bedroom and I lose a lot of sleep having to make sure it actually closes tightly every time my dog uses the door, which is quite frequent.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing trouble with your Freedom™ Patio Panel. Drafts can be a nuisance and we can understand how frustrated you must be. Please know that you can add an additional flap on your freedom style patio panel. Dual flaps are heavier and can help the flaps stay closed. You can find the replacement flaps at the link listed below.

Great product, 10/20/13
by
We have had our dog door for over 12 years, 2 dogs, and absolutely love it. It was the best investment we could have made for our first boxer and now our second one uses it for her freedom while we are at work.
We are just now replacing the flap as it is becoming worn and does not seal properly.
Thanks for many great years!
