The door itself appears to work well enough. I do agree with previous reviewers. Installation hardware should be included with this door. I've lived in multiple homes and all had recessed sliders. I don't agree that the majority are not recessed. Regardless, PetSafe could throw in a couple of aluminum brackets considering the price of this door or at least offer them free of charge and ship for those of us who need them. Instead, I've just spent an additional $12.90 with shipping to complete the installation of this door and won't have them on hand for another week.

Additionally, I will need to paint them so the aluminum doesn't stand out against the white door.

PetSafe, it's the forethought and consideration for details like this that make a product and company go from good to extraordinary. Products such as this are purchased for their convenience. So far, I've found your product to be anything but convenient.

PETSAFE RESPONSE

We appreciate you reaching out to us with your concerns and for providing feedback on the Freedom® Patio Door. While recessed frame sliding glass doors can be more prominent in certain locations and styles of homes, standard sliding glass doors continue to be the the norm for most homes in the United States.

Rather than package the brackets with every door and pass the costs associated with manufacturing and including these items onto our customers (as well as generating a good deal of waste when the unneeded brackets are discarded), we have these available for purchase separately for those customers which need them. The brackets are a plain silver color so that they can be painted according to each home.

We appreciate any and all feedback! Your experience has been passed along to the design teams. If you have any additional questions or concerns, feel free to give us a call at 1-866-732-4379.

I'm on my second round of big dogs. So it has been in use for over 20yrs. People need to watch the installation video before purchase. It clearly tells you what style door it works with and that you might have to purchase an installation kit if your door is different. I've had to replace the flap once do to the large amount of use. My dogs give it four paws up.

Thank you for sharing your story, Steve! We are glad to hear that this door has served you and your pups well.

So if your door is like 99% of most sliding glass doors, guess what you get to spend more money and have buy this bracket that should have been included with your dog door purchase. So go ahead and add another 15 dollars onto your purchase and still can not install your door for 3-5 more business days...

PETSAFE RESPONSE:

We are very sorry for any frustration this has caused, Brandon. The Patio Panel Kit for Recessed Door Frames that you mention is a separately available accessory kit for use with sliding glass doors with recessed frames. As the majority of sliding glass doors are non-recessed models, the bracket kit is not included with the initial purchase in order to reduce the cost for customers who do not require the extra parts. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The door itself is good, however, the foam seal provided, that goes between my slider and the Petsafe door, was cut 2 inches short.
Two days after install, we're watching TV, the whole sweep, just fell off, flopped on the floor.
Door surface was cleaned and properly dried, with Windex before mounting.
Double sided tape on the sweep, had come off the sweep and stuck to the door, useless.
So if you buy this door, head to the hardware store on the way home, buy some real double sided tape $14.00, and a roll of storm seal foam, 1/2 inch thick, another $8.
For $275, you guys could have at least provided worthwhile installation kit parts.

PETSAFE RESPONSE

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, Jerry. We are glad to hear that the Patio Panel is working well for you, but sorry to hear that the glass sweep has not met your needs and expectations. Please know that your situation has been passed on to the design team for review. If you have any questions or concerns, please give us a call at 1-800-732-2677.

Wow, you guys are really picky. We have had our door for gosh, I don't know maybe 7 years and never had any problems. In fact we are looking to purchase a medium one as we have a small one. Yes, a little air comes thru the flap but it's a dog door! We did put weather stripping on the side to keep some of the air out but it was no big deal. This door has held up a long time and there is still nothing wrong with it. We have one of those plastic type doors for our cat in another door that seals completely. To be honest, I don't think our tiny dogs would even push that open. In fact for some of them to train we had to remove the flap completely. So for those of you contemplating to purchase, remember mostly complainers leave reviews. We also had a medium one a long, long time ago and sold it cause we didn't think we would need it. And again, never had any problems with it either.

We purchased this door at petsmart and installed with no major issues. We did have to buy another glass sweep as the one that came with the door would not stick, Now just like many of the other reviews, the flap either stays open or blows open in the slightest breeze. to try and salvage the situation we did the recomended solution, and went to purchaes an additional flap. This is another $43. so to solve a design issue we have to spend more money with them and hope it works.

Very disipointed as we have been a loyal petsafe customer.

I was given this sliding glass door insert several years ago from a friend whose dogs wouldn't use it. I installed it myself (with the help of the online video), and my 8 year old golden retriever has used it ever since. I did add some weatherstripping on the sides to prevent cold weather drafts and it does blow open on occasion with wind gusts, but that's when I use the plastic insert. I have since moved to a home with french doors and have not found an adequate replacement without having the double paned windows cut.

I bought the patio panel that door and just installed it today. The door looks of good quality and it was relatively easy to install. My biggest pet peeve is all of the screws and brackets are silver. Or a metal color. I bought a white door and I thought or at least I thought it was common sense for the screws to come white as well. I'll keep it because it does serve it's purpose but I really wish the brackets and the screws or white to match the door so they do not stand out as a do right now.

Important. Before you purchase this door, check to see if you have a recessed application. If you do, call Customer Support before your purchase or installation. I've called their Customer Support and they are very helpful.

Without a minor design change, this door will not fit perfectly flush with the sliding glass door on recessed applications. Also, the door latch won't close properly. The amount of difference may not be acceptable to some.

Design changes are needed for the patio panel top height adjuster and the lower portion of the patio panel frame nearest the sliding glass door. These two areas need a recess for the recess door brackets. With these two modifications, the patio panel would fit flush with the sliding glass door. The brackets for the recess installation are too long for a bottom center install even on a medium door. The instruction video states large door only.

The installation videos on the web site are very well done and helpful.

In conclusion, I and my dog are pleased with this door. I have experienced no issues as expressed in prior reviews.

I certainly would not recommend this product for use in severe winter weather , but in moderate weather like we have here in Portland most of the yeat, it performed very well.

I purchased this doggy door from Pet Smart for $200.00. I exchanged it twice because the sides of the flap did not seal properly. By the 3rd one I didn't want to hassle anymore and had to have the door so kept it.

I also purchased 2 replacement flaps, thinking there was something wrong with the flap. I'm stupid but persistent! I'm no engineer but the problem seems to be the way the flap attaches to the door which causes the flap to bow out on the sides, allowing cold air to stream in - and believe me it is a breeze.

Don't bother buying this door. Spend the $400-$500 and get a good door with dual pane glass and a flap that actually works.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We apologize that the Freedom Patio Panel has failed to meet your expectations. To give your single flap pet door better wind resistance, you can add an extra flap to your door. Dual flaps are heavier and less likely to blow open in strong winds. This door also has a 1 year limited warranty. If you would like to discuss this issue further, please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677 so that we may help find a solution.

The flap is made of flimsy plastic which does not seal tightly when naturally closed. Also the flap sometimes stays open a bit after my dog comes in, letting in a tremendous amount of cold air in the winter. This door is in my bedroom and I lose a lot of sleep having to make sure it actually closes tightly every time my dog uses the door, which is quite frequent.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing trouble with your Freedom™ Patio Panel. Drafts can be a nuisance and we can understand how frustrated you must be. Please know that you can add an additional flap on your freedom style patio panel. Dual flaps are heavier and can help the flaps stay closed. You can find the replacement flaps at the link listed below.

We have had our dog door for over 12 years, 2 dogs, and absolutely love it. It was the best investment we could have made for our first boxer and now our second one uses it for her freedom while we are at work.
We are just now replacing the flap as it is becoming worn and does not seal properly.
Thanks for many great years!
