Very Happy, 6/6/14
by
My dog was used to the wall mount/magnetic dual flap door and it took her some time to adjust to the noises that the electronic door makes. She is very happy with it now and uses it more like a revolving door! I like that it has the ability to be locked and the sensitivity of the remote adjusted. It was easy to install and when she does manage to wear it out, I will be replacing it with another. I do recommend installing a deadbolt, slide bolt or chain higher on the door for security purposes. When I locked myself out, I was able to unlock the door by reaching through her dog door.

Great Door, 4/14/14
by
After about 1 year 8 months my door failed. I contacted customer service and was told it was an internal electronic failure and I need to completely replace the door. Needless to say I was not all that pleased, however after speaking with customer service I was offered a brand new replacement at a very good price including free shipping. Customer service was very professional and courteous. Since I was out of warranty I feel their offer was very fair. It's unfortunate that I need to replace the door, but I am ok with it. Looking forward to receiving the new door and hopefully it will last longer. I have had no other problems with the door. It has functioned flawlessly since installation. It won't keep people out but it does keep the neighbors cats out as well as Raccoons & Skunks.

great theory poor materials, 3/24/14
by
I bought the electronic door to keep the cats in and dogs able to come and go as they please, worked well for awhile. Never even used the electronic keys as I left it on training because cats were scared of the door. Door is broken where flap attaches haven't even had it up a year, was given as a gift and was bought sometime before giving it to me, then had to wait to get it installed , so I would say door has been up 8 months. Don't waste your money.

Great Door, 3/15/14

on line having to order our second door because we have two rambunctious boxers who have destroyed the first one after five years by running full speed in and out of that door. Keeps the cats in, but lets the dogs out! Definitely love it, or would not be buying another one!

POOR QUALITY, 3/12/14
by
I have purchased 4 of these doors in as many years. At $200.00 a door it's starting to get expensive. Every year during the winter I end up with a broken door. For the most part the door is well made the only down fall is the piece that holds the flap in place is plastic. Plastic and frigid cold weather do not go well together. You would think that a heavier type of material would be used to hold the flap in place. I have just come home from work and have a broken doggy door again!! I now have to decide if I want to try again or find another type of door.

Great when it works, 3/11/14
by
I purchased this door and the wall extension kit back in Dec, i needed a way for my puppy to get in and out but keep the cats in. I did a lot of research and read as many reviews as I could there were good and bad and a lot of tips on how to install correctly. I made sure I got someone who knew how to install these doors then hovered over him to make sure he followed the instructions.
The door worked great for 1 1/2 months then it started to fail, it kept locking so we would take out the batteries to reset it but finally it died it went into lock mode and would not unlock we could hear the gears going but it would not engage. We called customer service and they sent us a new one. They were great.
Door 2 arrived promptly and has been installed for 10 days and has had issues for most of them. This door won't lock and when we can get it to lock it doesn't stay that way. The door is perfectly level and I was very careful not to over tighten the screws. I now have to barricade the door during the day when we are not home and at night because one of my cats is big enough to push through it. This really defeats the purpose of the door.
Waiting on CS to call me back on what to do. I am very happy with this door at the moment if the issues get solved this will be great door.

by

excellent door , 2/8/14
by
We live in a rural area and wanted to find a product that would allow our pets in and out but not the skunks, opossums and other unwanted critters. This works great. Took our pets a bit to get it figured out but since then it has been great. We did find that since we live in a mobile home that the key works through the walls and when we have the keys set for max distance to activate the door and they are in the master bedroom at night the door is activated. The noise is loud at night. We do see that as advantage as the dogs and the cat have learned that the sound means they can go through the door without banging their heads. They have even learned not to follow each other too close going in or out because of the back swing of the door. We have had other types of doors and many do not stop the weather from coming in this one has been great this winter with single digits and lots of snow and rain. You can stand right next to this door and not feel the outside temps coming in and we do not get rain and snow coming in through the door.

Frustrating, 1/31/14
by
I purchased this door, so that my dogs have access to the yard, while my cats can remain in the house, during my long work hours. I had to purchase the wall mounting kit. Wall mounting came with no additional instructions, but luckily, was not too difficult to figure out. I assumed that since there was an available wall kit, that it would fit between wall studs...not the case! I had to remove about 1/4" of the stud on each side of the door, so that it would install properly. Once installed, it just took a little encouragement and treats for them to learn how to use it. However, once we set it to the automatic setting, problems arose. Getting outside was not much of a problem, but to get back into the house, the dog has to wait, for quite some time, with her nose nearly pressed to where the sensor is, for the door to unlock. She gets frustrated and leaves, and no longer attempts to use the door. I turned the sensitivity all the way up, and only one of the keys responds to it. So I have only one of my two dogs, that is able to use the door. It has been installed for only a week, and it's very disappointing.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing problems with your Electronic SmartDoor.™ The Smart Door Wall Conversion Kit should come with an installation manual and template. We do apologize that your kit did not have these items, but our Customer Care would be happy to send them to you. For sensitivity issues, there are a few troubleshooting steps we suggest located on our Troubleshooting page provided at the link below. I second the previous Awful review! , 1/21/14
by
Extremely sluggish in opening compared to my old magnetic door. Our dogs are cracking their heads on the door everytime, and get frustrated because the darn thing is so finicky, that it takes forever to register the key. And that's out of the package, fresh batteries in the door and the collar keys, and highest sensitivity.
My dog ended up breaking the door trying to get in and now I wasted $189.00 on a door that I can't even use!

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We are sorry to hear about the problems you've encountered with your Electronic SmartDoor.™ Unlike a magnetic door, our Smart Doors use a pulsating type of radio signal to communicate with the Smart Key, and it can take a few moments for the door to sense the key and respond. Thus, you may experience a "lag" or "delay."This PetSafe product is covered by a one year limited warranty. Please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677 so that we may provide troubleshooting tips and a possible solution for your issue. We look forward to hearing from you.

Door opens too slow for dogs and loud bang, 1/9/14
by
I bought this product on 1/10/2013 - Mainly to use the locking features when the dogs are not near the door.

I purchased this product to keep my house a little more secure. The setting with the yellow light will allow the dogs to enter and exit the house but the opening and closing mechanism takes 5seconds or a little less. The dogs run into the door occasionally when excited to come inside or go out. My dogs were raised with this product and still are having problems waiting, they normally paw the door to check if its open.

There is also a loud bang which echos throughout the infrastructure of the house and has woken me up several times. The younger dogs are in and out through-out the night.

Recommendation: I believe the best option is to not use a battery to power the door but instead use an electric plug to wire the door up which may reduce the open/close time.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We apologize for the problems you have encountered with your Electronic SmartDoor.™ However, the radio signal being sent from the door is a pulsating type of signal and it can take a few moments for the door to sense the key and respond. Thus, you may experience a "lag" or "delay" as to when the door responds. This delay can also be increased if the door is installed in a metal door or in some cases a wall. Also, the Smart Door is designed to initiate a "clicking" noise when the flap opens. This sound is an audible signal for your pet to know it is ok to enter or exit the door. We also do have an electronic door that does use a power cord instead of battery to operate. You can view it on our website at: http://store.petsafe.net/passport-pet-door . Doesn't Last, 11/8/13
by
The door works fine, that is until the mechanism holding the flap breaks. I'm on my third one now, and I can tell it's getting ready to break any day now. Bought the first one and had it professionally installed by our local Invisible Fence Brand company. It lasted less than a year which was actually good because Petsafe sent a replacement. That one lasted just over a year so had to run out to Petsmart to purchase our third one. Recently noticed the plastic holding the metal rod of the flap mechanism is broke in a couple places again, same issue as the past two doors. So I have to leave it unlocked or it won't work at all. When it breaks all the way my two dogs get stuck on whichever side they are on as the flap will drop down and be stuck. So could be a great door, but for the price it's just too much to pay every year!

PETSAFE RESPONSE: We apologize that the Electronic SmartDoor™ has failed to meet your expectations. This PetSafe product is covered by a one year limited warranty and even if the door is over the initial warranty, there may still be replacement options available to you. Please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677 so that we may provide a possible solution for your issue. We look forward to hearing from you.

Awful door, 9/15/13
by
Extremely sluggish in opening compared to my old magnetic door. Our dogs are cracking their heads on the door everytime, and get frustrated because the darn thing is so finicky, that it takes forever to register the key. And that's out of the package, fresh batteries in the door and the collar keys, and highest sensitivity.

But for that, I get the door opening up randomly during the day and during the night.

Also, the only thing that will let your dogs know that the door has unlocked is an extremely loud bang. The bang is loud enough that it scared my dogs, and I had a very hard time convincing them to use the door.

Combined with that nonsense, and the door being super slow to open, my dogs are thoroughly confused and have opted to just not go outside anymore.

Awful awful product. Flat out horrible. Don't put your dogs through the confusion.

Does the Trick, 8/27/13
by
We use this door for our cat, who was at one point a stray. It took him only a couple of weeks to figure it out and has been using it hundreds of times a day since, which is about 2 years now.

The first door we got ended up being a lemon, but they sent us another one for free, which is the one we are currently using. It really works well as long as you keep it stocked with batteries. When the batteries begin to die the door sometimes starts to act up (stays unlocked), but that just means you need to change the batteries. We change our about every 3 weeks and our cat is a heavy user.

Fantastic!!, 8/26/13

We love this door. We had it installed 5 years ago by the guy who installed the new back door. Works perfectly. Our dogs can come and go as they please. The wireless-key never fails and we've only had to replace it's battery three times. The door batteries last well also. We lock it at night and feel completely safe. The only minor draw-back is the size of the wireless key (collar-dongle). The wireless key is fine for our large 85 lb dog, but is too large for a cat. However, the cat is smart enough to go in/out with the dog.
Our dogs/cat love their backyard and we love not having to let them out so frequently.
When we move, we will take this door with us. I recommend it to everyone who would let their pet(s) go out freely.

Love it, 8/17/13

My cats used to bring half dead animals in the middle of the night and I had enough. I was also afraid something would happen to them like getting hit by a car. I didn't even know such a door existed until someone at Petsmart suggested it. Well the reviews were mixed and the door a little expensive. I decided to give it a try anyway. My boyfriend thought it was hysterical, saying " That door will never work. Those cats will figure it out in a day and follow the dog right out. " It's been nearly three weeks and the cats have stopped even trying to get out, in fact they may even be a bit afraid of it due the noise it makes when it swings before it locks. So far I have had not one problem with it. Absolutely love it and now my cats are safe and so is the wild life in mine and my neighbor's yards!!!!

Dreadful, 7/11/13

Bought this door originally around November 2011. Worked intermittently, locks randomly and stays unlocked randomly as well. Got tired of it so called the helpdesk almost a year later. Got a replacement for free. Same problems. Now expected to pay $75 for another replacement, that probably won't work either. Check Amazon reviews, more 1 star ratings than 5 star, tells you everything you need to know about this door. I've written to customer service asking for a solution or a full refund, since this door does not work.
