terrible engineering from a cleaning perspective, 10/6/14
by
Our cats liked drinking from the unit is the good part.

the bad part is that it requires frequent cleaning which we would not mind except the design requires flimsy parts to be taken apart, cleaned, and reassembled. OMG are you kidding me. That design had to be done by the person who finished last in his engineering or design class but still graduated.

After a few cleanings where the parts would not stay together i just pitched it in the trash.

For those reasons alone I would not recommend buying one of this design. Until you put it together the first time you can not understand how bad the design really is.

I am now searching for a better designed system.

i really love this water fountain and my cats seem to like it to i keep it out side on my screen in porch that's were they seem to spend the whole day so they always have water at there reach and they stay away from my water fountain. now the only down fall i have with this fountain is every time i have to clean it if you don't do it right it will leak from the bottom it always takes me like 3 to 4 times before i can get the pipes in correct its a little frustrating but over all its a nice fountain

The good, the bad and the slimy, 6/27/14
by
The great thing about this fountain, other than its beautiful design, is that my cat who normally only drinks from the bathroom tap ( she has twice stepped on the drain, stopping the sink and flooding the bathroom) will actually use it! Hooray!

However, it needs to be refilled frequently, and is STUPID complicated to clean. You literally have to take the entire thing apart to rinse out the filter, which gets slimy pretty fast. And then the bowl gets slimy. And Miss Priss won't go near it unless I clean it AT LEAST three times a week. Really, guys, there should have been more attention paid to ease of maintenance!

Some may find the waterfall noise a bit loud - I don't mind it.

At this price point, should be more troublefree.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: Thank you for your time and feedback regarding your experience with the Drinkwell Lotus Fountain. We are sorry to hear of the trouble you've encountered with the slimy filter and bowl. Please know that if you have multiple pets or dogs use the fountain, the slimy feeling may be caused by your pet’s saliva. Unfortunately, the best way to pre\vent this is to change the water and clean your fountain more frequently. We also suggest to make sure the fountain parts are rinsed thoroughly after cleaning the fountain. Soap residue may cause the sliminess. If you are still experiencing issues, we would be happy to offer further troubleshooting tips. Not the best. , 6/24/14

I really wish I hadn't bought this fountain. Seems like a great idea, but the reality is not. The pump is really quiet, which is important to me; much quieter than the last fountain I had (a different brand). With the upper tier on it, the falling water makes more noise than I feel like dealing with most of the time, and it seems to splash a bit over the side. I took the top tier off, and like it much better. Putting it back together after I clean it is a major pain. The first time I washed it, it took half an hour to get it set up correctly afterwards so the water was coming out as it should. The last time I cleaned it, I apparently didn't get it set up just right because it leaks out the bottom. I like the fact that it is ceramic, which is actually why I bought it, but the pump coming up the middle of the lower bowl really doesn't leave much room for the cats to drinks. Taking all of this into consideration, and the fact that it was so expensive (I paid much more than it is listed for here), makes me suggest that you don't waste your money on this model.

Pros and cons, 6/5/14
by
Ths fountain is beautiful to look at, makes a lovely bubbling water sound and - miraculously - my super finicky cat actually accepts it! (Normally will only drink out of bathtub faucet.) BUT it is NOT easy to clean and must be cleaned often - they recommend you totally take it apart on at least a weekly basis! This is just plain impractical and poor design. Of course, since you have to disassemble often, theres more likelihood of leaks, etc. That's a shame.

Horrible, 5/17/14
by
DO NOT buy this fountain. Yes it is aesthetically pleasing but it is made like crap. I bought and returned 3 different fountains because it leaks and when you try to tighten it the plastic breaks. Just pick a different fountain and if you don't you better buy a couple extra pluming kits to fix it every other day.

Cats love it!, 5/6/14
by
Both cats love it and no longer have "wet necks." I like the ceramic aspect of the fountain, but the upper section has chipped and cracked. I wish that part was available to order. I just had to replace the "plumbing" and was glad to be able to find it reasonably priced. The first time it ever leaked in over two years was when the "tower" tube cracked at the base. Used a little duck tape to hold it together while waiting for the replacement to arrive.

Easy to clean, too easy to break, 2/18/14
by
My cats love the fact that the water goes straight up in the air. I have one that has trouble drinking and the fountain fills her mouth so she drinks more. Being ceramic it is easy to clean. My area has very hard water and the lime scale build up on plastic fountains becomes impossible to remover.

On the down side, about every third time I take it apart the tube the cord comes in through breaks right at the base above the threads. If you do not check it and catch the problem you end up with a leak. I would think that it would be simple to redesign this part to fix this. The plastic it is made out of cannot be glued back together with anything I have been able to find. Expect to buy more of these parts over time.

not one of their best products, 11/21/13
by
I have several different pet fountains from this company. This one was aesthetically the best. But as a prior reviewer described, it is very difficult to put together and leaks if you make a mistake. All of the water will leak out the bottom so keep a towel under it. It is so difficult to assemble I found myself not using it. Then the plastic seal in the base fractured and now the unit cannot be used as it leaks. Frankly I was relieved it broke since I had such a hard time assembling it and I threw it way- I did not want to deal with the frustration of trying to assemble it every week. The design is flawed but the presentation of a soothing Zen like fountain is appealing. I liked the ceramic base- easier to clean than the plastic ones. I am going to try the multi level one next.

Best all around fountain. My only complaint is the plastic plumbing which can break. But no problem, just ordered a plumbing replacement kit for $5. Other than that, it's very easy to clean and maintain.

Lotus Fountain Keeps My Cats Healthy, 10/9/13
by
I've had our Lotus fountain about 1 1/2 years. Our oldest cat (14 yrs) has renal disease and it is crutial that his water intake is good. He drinks often from the bubbling fountain top and from the sides when it's not plugged in (at night). Our vet says that feline cystitis is caused by lack of water as cats by nature don't drink much. I am pleased for the health benefits so our beloved pet can have a longer, healthy life. It is crutial to keep the filter and fountain clean. Thanks for a solid product and supplying replacement parts.

Design problems, 9/20/13
by
I was really keen to get this product and a friend brought it from the U.S. for me (I am located in Australia). I had to obtain a voltage regulator in order to operate it, but finally got it running.

There are several problems with the design.

1. the actual bowl sections are a bit small, and while my one cat loves to drink while it is working the others don't, so I have to remove the top part as their heads are too large to drink from the lower bowl comfortably, and even more difficult with the top bowl in place.

2. The plastic tubes connecting from the pump do not click into place, so it is almost impossible to get them to fit into the fountain part - thereby causing an instant puddle if you haven't been able to fit it right. I'm still trying to figure out the best way of putting it all back together again after I've cleaned it. Suggestions would be helpful - perhaps I have missed some crucial bit of info.

3. On the positive side the motor is very quiet - which was a bit of an issue with the other pet fountain I had (worked great for ages until the plastic finally cracked), also with the top bowl in it makes a soothing trickling sound which is very pleasant.

My cat sits on the counter and waits for me to turn it on for him. A rubber pressure pad that automatically turns it on would be a great way to go - but the other cats would need to have a place where they can avoid turning it on if they so choose (and I'm pretty sure my kitties would figure it out). I've previously owned an Original Drinkwell Fountain and was very happy with it.

Cat Loves It, 9/17/13

This fountain has increased my tortoise shell cat's water intake by leaps and bounds, where others failed. It is VERY durable (it has been kicked several times without breakage), looks great, & easily cleaned in the dishwasher or by hand. The Internal plumbing must not be tightened too much or it will break, though. Even though, I recommend highly.

Great product., 8/27/13
by
Your product has done wonders for my male cat. He is eleven years old and would no longer drink water from a bowl and the smell of ammonia from his cat box was overpowering (it does get cleaned daily). He now drinks plenty of water and the smell is gone. The funny thing is he only drinks from the very top just like a human would from a drinking fountain. It took a couple of times to get comfortable cleaning it but no problems so far and it only takes a few minutes. No leaks, no drips and a healthy cat. Thanks.

diasppointed, 8/27/13

We bought the fountain for our 7 cats. They love it. I noticed the other day that the wire that attaches to the plug was becoming frayed and the inside metal was exposed. This morning my cats were sitting around it and nothing was working. Turns out the wire completely frayed from the plug. The plug itself was very HOT. The wire/plug is not made well. It should not have been damaged this way from just plugging and unplugging it into the wall. I called to see if the warranty would cover it but I need my receipt. I have to look and see but honestly - who keeps recipts for 9 months? Also, its obvious I bought the product and its a petsafe product. What do they need the recipt for??

This product is a piece of junk, 8/14/13

This water bowl is JUNK. I've had this water bowl for two weeks and it leaked on me twice. I tightened the nut up on the bottom to try to seal and the plastic tubing and it broke. Now I have a $80 water bowl that I can't use.

Plumbing parts break, 8/7/13
by
I have had this fountain for about 4 months, I am very careful when cleaning the product, I don't "exert pressure" on the plastic parts. I didn't even take the cord pass-through piece apart when I cleaned the fountain so as to not put strain on it. However, the part broke anyway, and it broke in a spot that isn't stressed. This is definitely a design or manufacturing flaw. I think the washer material reacts with the plastic pass-through and causes it to disintegrate. While the kit is only $5, the shipping is also $5; and $10 every 4 months is unacceptable especially considering this shouldn't be happening.

mixed feelings on this one, 7/25/13
by
I bought this fountain for my cat after he had problems with his urinary tract, which is commonly in male housecats. This fountain does encourage him to drink more, and until a couple of months ago, we were problem free. I think perhaps there's a flaw with the bowl itself. It's not properly glazed along the rim and has left the edges mildewed over time despite cleaning it. That cannot be healthy for a FIV compromised cat. I have tried everything to remove it--vinegar, scrubbing with a salt paste, etc., but since the edge is unfinished it had proven to be an impossible task to lift the staining. I am not excited after dropping $80 on a water bowl/fountain to have to replace it so soon. Is there away to replace the bowl itself? I cannot find one listed in the unique shape of this fountain anywhere. Be warned!

Possible user error?, 6/30/13
by
I have owned this fountain for a little over 6 months, and thus far no real problems. Looking over the other reviews, I was surprised. I'll 'fess up and reveal that I'm lazy and don't clean the fountain as often as I should, and that's my fault. However, I'd like to address the complaints of leaking and breaking plastic. When I first took mine out of the box, I read the instructions cover to cover then set it up. When the time arrived for the first cleaning, I took the instructions again and set them where I could follow step by step.

Having worked in a vet's office back in high school, I washed it with hot soapy water and a scrub brush. This gets most of the big things clean. When it came time to go after the muck, I go to my bathroom and grab a fistful of cotton swabs, also known as Q-tips. These are skinny enough to fit in all the crevices, and don't damage the plastic or silicone parts. I dip each swab in white vinegar which acted as a sanitizer to clean, then make sure to rinse each part under cool water to take away any vinegary scent or taste. So that addresses the problem of difficult to clean.

As for the breaking plastic, well anything will break if enough pressure is exerted on it. I don't handle the plastic parts with kid gloves, but I certainly don't go about forcing them or anything like that. Initially, I thought my unit was a bit defective when I couldn't get the top cap off the first time I cleaned it, but I was able to get it off in preparation for the second cleaning. But hey, $5 for a tubing replacement kit? Considering we already pay for filters for the fountain, $5 for a replacement/repair kit is cheap and appropriate.

Thirdly, this issue of leaking. The instructions and the cone-shaped housing both clearly mark a minimum fill and a maximum fill line. The instructions clearly state that filling past the max fill line will result in leaking. Also, not having the nut on the outside bottom of the large bowl not completely tightened can result in leaks. Why not put a mat or a pan underneath to catch any leaks, and not fill past max fill?

I'm not dismissing previous reviewer concerns, I just don't think others read directions carefully as needed.

Two cats use the system and they seem quite happy with it.

Bad case of "form over function", 6/7/13
by
Whoever designed this product does not use it. The guts are cheap plastic tubes that are impossible to clean, and break easily. Water can easily leak out the cord control tube all over the floor. Did I mention impossible to clean? Seriously, you need to involve actual pet owners/users in your design research. This is the worst of the Drinkwell fountains, mostly because at that price point, I was expecting something better engineered.

Design flaw, 6/5/13

Just received my fountain and I found that the pass thru tube was already broken. I called PetSafe's customer service and they are sending me a new plumbing kit. I have reviewed this product on another web site and most of the reviews have the same problem. You would think by now PetSafe would have found a permanent fix for this problem. Anyways if this new plumbing kit works I will order more kits to have on hand in case the tube breaks again. Other than that I really like the fountain.

Very poorly designed, 5/27/13
by
This fountain leaks all over our floor and we have only owned it 2 months. We would never buy this product again. It leaks from the pump system. The cord comes in where the water goes up the fountain, they are side by side so the water goes staight out where the cord comes in. Very poor design.
