Turns out cats can apparently get used to almost anything. We put the electric fence around our yard because our neighbors were complaining about him getting into their yards and upsetting things, leaving little unwanted presents, etc. It worked great up until the last couple of months or so (we've had it for about a year & a half). It's important to realize that our cat is very curious, adventurous, exploratory, outgoing, etc. There is little that he's afraid of (short of traffic noise; he hates the sound of running cars!). Second, we have the collar turned up to the highest setting. He's fine with his boundaries during the day; when he gets close to the wire and hears the warning beep, he backs off. But apparently after dark there is just too much interesting stuff out there and his curiosity gets the better of him. Tonight we watched him test the fence at one point, and jump away when he got bit. But then he headed in another direction, where apparently the zone is thinner than elsewhere, and before we could get close enough to prevent him, he just walked right across it with barely even a flinch! And he was off and running in the dark in the neighbor's yard. I read something about being able to get a collar with higher settings for more adventurous (aggressive?) animals; I hope they have one for cats, because overall, I really like this product, and I'd hate to have to (try to!) turn him into an indoor cat because he's figured out that the collar's bite is not as bad as its bark.

PETSAFE RESPONSE: Thank you for sharing your experience with the Deluxe In-Ground Cat Fence Receiver Collar. We are happy to hear of the successes you have had with the system, and can understand your frustration with this situation!
We would first recommend to perform a Systems Test. The instructions for this test can be viewed in your manual available at the link below. This test will ensure that the collar and transmitter is working properly. If everything is successful, and you are noticing a smaller boundary area in certain locations, you may have signal interference. Check the wire for any damages and also be wary of any large metal objects near that particular area. We do have other collars that are designed for pets, but they are larger and a bit heavier. The success of the other PetSafe receivers would depend on your cat's size. If you have any questions about other collars or need help with your system, please contact our Customer Care Center at 1-800-732-2677.

Buy. This. Now. This is amazing. I have 4 cats. 3 of which are a year old or younger. They were on the countertops at all time in the kitchen and I was an anxious mess. We put the transmitter underneath the kitchen sink and another one in an area by the refrigerator (we have a large kitchen). They can come into the kitchen but they can't get anywhere near the countertops. SUCH a lifesaver for me. The thought of cat paws on my countertops made me what to gag. We have probably 4 transmitters and I have the collars on all 3 of the cats. My other cat doesn't have to have a collar because she doesn't jump anywhere. I've recommended to several people at work. The thought of shocking your cat is a little weird for some people but the cats don't seem overly anxious or have any effect from the transmitters. Just make sure you don't put it on too tight. It could cause a nasty infection (we had that happen but we caught it early and loosened it up). The transmitters are a bit bulky so it's nice to kind of hide them in cabinets, etc.

This is an excellent product and works extremely well on my cats. I have an indoor cat and dogs with a doggy door. I didn't want my cat getting outdoors...this works great to keep him safe and in doors where he belongs.

I am so glad to have found this product. My kitten was tempted to urinate in the dining room after following the lead of a sick older who has since passed away. Placing the device in the dining room has made all of the difference. She stays out of the room and we are able to keep her:) We have used it for five years now.
